"THE FAT & ROUND PIG"
KuneKune Pigs
About The Breed
Did you know that "Kunekune" means "fat and round" in the Maori language? It's fitting for this docile and cute-faced pig from New Zealand. Interestingly, they don't originate from New Zealand, but there are many theories on how they got there. Some believe that trade brought them over, while others think the Maories introduced them to their homeland.
In the 1970s, the Kunekune pig breed almost went extinct, but they were saved and are now thriving in New Zealand, the UK, and the United States. One look at a Kunekune pig, and you'll see why they appear to be straight out of a cartoon book. They have short, upturned snouts and slightly floppy to floppy ears. They're covered in hair that can be short and straight or long and curly, and they come in various colors such as cream, ginger, brown, black, and spotted. These pigs have short legs and a round body, and a unique feature of most Kunekune pigs is a pair of tassels, called piri piri, under their chin.
Temperament-wise, Kunekune pigs are amusing, calm, and very friendly. They make great pets and are often used for therapy because of their gentle demeanor. Additionally, Kunekune pork is outstanding, with excellent marbling and a deep red color similar to beef. At Wild Things Ranch, we rotationally graze our pigs with electric fencing, allowing us to give them the best diet possible while keeping the impact on the land minimal.
At Wild Things Ranch, we are committed to cultivating everything with love and respect for the land. Our mission is to offer top-quality meats from our ranch straight to your plate.
